High Holy Day

The Sabbath

What is the Sabbath?

The Sabbath, according to scripture was instituted on the 7th day of the week when the Most High “RESTED” from his work of the creation of the Heavens and the Earth. The word “SABBATH” means “REST”. Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2:2 And on the SEVENTH day God ended his work which he had made; and he RESTED on the SEVENTH day from all his work which he had made. 2:3 And God blessed the SEVENTH day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had RESTED from all his work which God created and made. As we read the text we see The Most High RESTED on the Seventh day and “SANCTIFIED” it. The meaning of the word Sanctified means: (set apart as or declare holy; consecrate synonyms: consecrate, bless, make holy, hallow, make sacred).

Exodus 20:8 Remember the SABBATH day, to keep it holy. The Most High commanded us to “Remember The Sabbath and to keep it HOLY”.

 How to observe the Sabbath?

What are the do’s and dont’s when observing the Sabbath?

How are we to do and observe what the Most High commanded for his day he sanctified?

NO WORKING:

"Exodus 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."

The Most High is letting us know that within these Six (6) days we are to do ALL work, no matter whom or what. NO COOKING: Exodus 16:23 And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning. When the Sabbath approached, meaning the day before Israel was commanded to prepare food so they would not violate the Sabbath. The word “seethe” is to bubble up or boil.

"Exodus 35:2-3 Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death. 3 Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day."

In verse 3 this is meaning to cook anything and includes the use of Microwaves. No Buying or Selling:

"Nehemiah 10:31 And if the people of the land bring ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt."

In this verse the “ware” is pottery and “victual” are food or provisions prepared for consumtion and this was being sold on the Sabbath to Israel.

"Nehemiah 13:15-21

15 In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals.

16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?

18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

19 And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.

20 So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.

21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath."

These verses are an explanation of what was happening in the book of Nehemiah 10 with Israel. The Sign For Israel:

"Exodus 31:12-17

12 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.

14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.

16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.

17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed."
